Ironically, Josh Allen’s rookie year numbers were not what you would call “impressive.” The raw prospect out of Wyoming threw more interceptions than touchdowns but flashed the potential he would realize fully in seasons to come.

Top 5 Bailey Zappe Rookie Cards and Outlook

Since his rookie season, Allen has cemented the value of his cards by improving year after year.

The cannon-armed signal-caller is now an unstoppable force who has made the Buffalo Bills a constant Super Bowl contender. So his rookie cards have become some of those most coveted in football collecting circles.

Of those rookie cards, our top 10 must-have investments include:

10. 2018 Josh Allen Panini Select Field Level #207

The Panini Select Field Level rookie cards are always a solid investment but rarely appear up for auction at a PSA 10 grade.

Panini hits a home run with the 2018 Josh Allen Field Level Select RC. The card shows Allen scrambling to his right while looking downfield for an open wide-out or tight end.

His name is plastered in the bottom right-hand corner, while the rookie card Panini Logo is placed in the top right-hand corner.

Our recommendation? Place a bid on this bad boy at a PSA 10 grade if/when you see it up for auction.

9. 2018 Josh Allen Panini Flawless RPA (/10) #RCD-JA

Is there any other trading card brand with a higher floor or ceiling than Panini?

We think not.

The 2018 Josh Allen Panini Flawless RPA (/10) #RCD-JA is immaculate, with a horizontal layout and a rectangular patch, lending this card a unique look. An autograph pops in blue ink amidst a sterling white backdrop, and an image of an alert Allen on the run from a defensive lineman is a stark change from so many of the staged Josh Allen rookie card images.

The Panini Flawless Josh Allen rookie card lives up to its name, and you can expect the price tag to reflect the flawless pedigree.

8. 2018 Josh Allen Panini Select Premier Level RC #139

A card that falls in the middle tier of this list price-wise, the 2018 Josh Allen Panini Select Premier Level RC #139 has emerged as one of the standouts from this set. It features Allen casually tossing a pass, shoulders spread wide with a look of concentration on his face.

While this is not the most inspired design of the Josh Allen rookie cards, it has a particular polish for which the Select brand is known. With a simple series of semi-circular golden borders around the picture of Allen, what you see is truly what you get with this card.

Look for one of the rarer parallels as a value booster for this card.

7. 2018 Josh Allen Panini Prizm Stained Glass #SG8

One of the inserts from Panini’s 2018 class of Prizms, the 2018 Josh Allen Panini Prizm Stained Glass #SG8, will take collectors straight to church.

This card is an exclusive club with only ten NFL players featured in the Stained Glass collection. The price tag reflects this, especially if you seek a Gold Mojo (/10) or Black Finite (/1) parallel.

The Josh Allen Stained Glass #SG8 shows the rookie with arms bowed as he cradles the ball. A multi-colored backdrop emulates a three-tiered stained glass window (as you might have guessed). This is an undeniable niche design with the makings of a love-it-or-hate Josh Allen rookie card.

6. 2018 Josh Allen Donruss Rated Rookie RC #304

One of the more affordable Josh Allen rookie cards, the 2018 Josh Allen Donruss Rated Rookie #304, offers a simple but effective concept.

Designed in the earliest sports card mold, Allen looks into the distance as a cameraman snaps a staged, helmet-less photograph. Presumably captured before Allen has even played an NFL snap, this somewhat kitschy card has appeal to collectors of all purchasing powers.

5.  2018 Josh Allen National Treasures RPA (/99) RC #163

One of the costlier of the Josh Allen rookie cards, the 2018 National Treasures RPA RC #163 features an autograph and a player patch. Panini’s National Treasures collection has become a favorite of collectors for a good reason—without exception, these cards look fantastic. The premium price point of National Treasures packs only boosts the value of rare rookie cards like this one.

Population Report

  • PSA 10 grades: 13 total | $70k avg (give or take)
  • PSA 9 grades: 13 total | $20k avg
  • PSA 8 grades: 3 total | $10k avg

The card features Allen in his statuesque glory, standing tall in the pocket in the white-and-blue Bills getup that is so common amongst his rookie cards. The patch and autograph are the main attraction, commanding the left-hand two-thirds of the card.

If you have deep pockets (or immense luck), this may be a card worth adding to your collection.

4. 2018 Panini Contenders Rookie Ticket RC #105

Card buffs immediately recognize “Panini Contenders” as a brand that warrants attention. Throw in the Josh Allen rookie card factor, and this already elite brand becomes a must-have item.

There are two versions of this card, both of which come with an autograph. The base version shows Allen facing to his right, primed to throw. The “ticket” banner sits prominently to the right of Allen’s photo above a blue autograph. In the base card, Bill’s logo is black.

Conversely, the Bills logo is full color on the Variation copy of the 2018 Panini Contenders Allen Rookie Ticket. The layout is the same, but the image shows Allen rolling to his left. With either card, you are getting a vital rookie card featuring one of the surest bets in the NFL today.

Look out for this card’s 2018 Panini Contenders Optic iteration, which adds a chrome sheen to the base Rookie Ticket card.

3. 2018 Donruss Optic Downtown #DT14

Donruss’ 2018 Downtown insert averaged one per every 240 packs, making it a rarity. This limited supply and Allen’s status as a rookie in 2018 have made the 2018 Josh Allen Donruss Optic Downtown #DT14 a hot item.

The card has the wild look of an insert, as the flashy backdrop of Saved by the Bell-style polygons and team-themed cartoon graphics are a drastic departure from Donruss’ more restrained base cards. We find Allen mid-shuffle, casually tossing a pass in the Bills’ iconic home uniforms.

This is one of the more unconventional offerings from Josh Allen’s crop of rookie cards, and the collecting community has taken a liking to this rare, unconventional insert.

2. 2018 Josh Allen Panini Kaboom RC #K-JA

Collectors who covet cards with a visual punch will love the 2018 Josh Allen Panini Kaboom RC #K-JA. Released as part of a multi-sport Kaboom set, this card comes with Panini’s coveted “RC” emblem in the upper-righthand corner, granting instant legitimacy to this unique card.

Population Report

  • PSA 10 grades: 37 total | $9.6k avg (give or take)
  • PSA 9 grades: 41 total | $3.8k avg
  • PSA 8 grades: 12 total | $1k avg

True to the Kaboom brand, the card has a comic book-like style, with an image of Allen releasing an overhead pass. The semi-realistic graphic style warrants multiple looks, as the card infuses artistry into the classic sports card look.

The fact that Allen made his way into the multi-sport Kaboom set hints at the unique nature of this card. His was one of 50 base cards in the set, alongside legends like Charles Barkley and Tom Brady, as well as fellow transcendent young stars like Neymar and Patrick Mahomes.

Gold and Green parallels are numbered 10 and one, respectively.

1A. 2018 Josh Allen Panini Select Silver Prizm #24

We couldn’t help ourselves.

The decision was too complicated, so instead of labeling the Josh Allen Silver Select Prizm RC number two were going to roll with a 1A rating.

The return on investment on this card should be similar to the base Prizm shown below.

Do not hesitate to put a bid on this card when available. Even consider a buy now if set at a reasonable price.

1. 2018 Josh Allen Prizm RC #205

If Josh Allen represents one of the safest players in NFL-centric collecting circles, Panini Prizms rank among the safest cards. This is a match made in collecting heaven.

The 2018 Josh Allen Prizm RC #205 has several rare parallels, including the Black Finite Prizm (/1), Gold Vinyl Prizm (/5), and Blue Shimmer Prizm (/9). Because it is the most accessible of the Prizms, let’s talk about the base Prizm.

Silver Prizm Population Report

  • PSA 10 grades: 26 total | $10k avg (give or take)
  • PSA 9 grades: 76 total | $2.9k avg
  • PSA 8 grades: 20 total | $1k avg

The card reflects Panini’s trademark consistency with the Prizm, making the player’s image the central focus with few stylistic flares to distract the athlete. Allen rolls to his right, arm cocked at his unique semi-sidearm angle, ready to release a dart.

Panini Prizm base cards are nice enough, but the real value lies in the rarest parallels. Low-number parallels are not only more visually appealing than the base card but also offer the limited supply that serious collectors seek.

Outlook

As the trading card market has shown more volatility since its boom in 2020, collectors may seek more reliable assets. There are fewer sure things in the NFL than Josh Allen; therefore, the Bills quarterback is one of the most coveted rookie cards on the market.

As the main character on a loaded roster, it seems as though Allen and his squad will be in the Super Bowl picture each year. As the primary reason for the team’s success, Allen’s already lofty stocks seem primed for further inflation.
