BetMGM App Types of Bets

Three of the most popular bets comprise betting on the point spread, total, or moneyline, though the BetMGM mobile app offers customers endless possibilities to place wagers on sports. As such, here’s an in-depth look at the diverse types of bets you can make through the BetMGM sportsbook.

The Spread

Placing a wager on the point spread is one of the most basic and widespread bets in sports. Sportsbooks meticulously craft a point spread based on various factors to determine the projected outcome of a game. There is a favorite and an underdog in nearly any given game, with the rare pick’em determined when a sportsbook considers that teams are evenly matched.

To illustrate how the point spread functions, let’s refer to Super Bowl 55 between the Kansas City Chiefs (-3.5) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Let’s say you placed a wager on the Chiefs (-3.5); the Chiefs would have had to win the game by at least four points to cover the spread for the wager to be successful. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9, not only did the Chiefs fail to cover the spread, but they lost the game outright.

While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were victorious in Super 55, suppose you placed a wager on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3.5). The Buccaneers could have lost the game by three points or less, and the wager would still be successful.

As an alternative, BetMGM users have the opportunity to manipulate the spread to either boost their chances of winning their bet or risk their prospects of increasing the potential payout.

Using the previous example, if you bet on the Kansas City Chiefs (-3.5) but wanted to play it safe and lower the spread to -2.5, BetMGM users have that option. However, the odds will significantly change, impacting your potential payout. In this example, if you lowered the spread to Chiefs -2.5, the bet would have still been unsuccessful.

On the flip side, let’s say you felt strongly that the Chiefs would win by more than the 3.5 spread; you can increase the point spread to 4.5, increasing your potential payout if the bet is successful. Also in this example, the wager would have been unsuccessful.

If you bet on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3.5) in Super Bowl 55, but you wanted to increase the 3.5 points they received, BetMGM users can buy points, though the potential payout will decrease.

If you wanted to bet on the Buccaneers (+3.5) and felt confident that they might keep the game closer than expected or even win outright, you could lower the points the Buccaneers received, increasing your potential payout if the bet was successful.

A total bet, often called an over/under bet, or O/U bet, is a wager placed on the scoring outcome at the conclusion of any given game.

While spread bets depend on the point differential, and moneyline bets hinge on the winning team, a bettor who places a wager on the over/under doesn’t typically mind which team prevails, as long as the combined score of both teams adheres to the bettors’ wager, whether they bet on the over or the under.

Dating back to Game 6 of the 2021 NBA Finals between the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks, BetMGM sportsbook revealed the total at 216.5 points. As the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Atlanta Hawks 105-98, a total combined score of 203, a bettor who wagered on the under would have been successful.

Bettors can place an over/under bet on anything from runs scored in baseball, goals scored in a soccer match, and even proposition bets, such as a quarterback’s number of passing yards in a game.

Like spread bets, BetMGM also offers bettors comprehensive options to place an over/under bet. For example, a bettor can wager on the O/U of a quarter in football, the O/U at the half in basketball, and even the O/U regarding the number of points a particular team will score, with bettors able to select the desired number of points, with adjusted odds of course.

Unlike a spread bet, a moneyline bet is a wager placed on the outright winner of a game, regardless of scoring margin. Moneyline wagers are subject to adjusted odds, as moneyline bets on the underdog will provide bettors a larger payout than a moneyline bet on the favorite.

On March 6, 2016, the reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors played on the road at the then Staples Center versus the Los Angeles Lakers. The Warriors were a heavy favorite (-17.5), with a -1000 moneyline, while the Lakers were a massive underdog (-17.5) and a +2000 moneyline.

In one of the biggest upsets in NBA history, the late Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers (13-51) shocked the Warriors (55-6) by a final score of 112-95.

With such drastic moneyline odds, if the Warriors had won, a $100 bet would net bettors $1, while a $100 bet on the Lakers would net $2,000. As such, moneyline bets are determined by specific odds that significantly affect the final payout.

Like point spreads and over/under wagers, the BetMGM sportsbook offers customers the option to bet on the moneyline for who has the lead at the end of a specific quarter or the half.

A parlay is a multi-dimensional bet that requires bettors to merge at least two wagers to win a bet. If a bettor places a parlay on two teams and only one or neither team wins, the parlay bet is unsuccessful. However, if both teams win their respective game, the bettor receives a payout based on fixed odds. If any of the games in the parlay tie, the bettor will still win their bet; though, the odds are adjusted accordingly.

To exemplify the potential payout for a parlay bet, on November 16, 2021, a bettor placed a 15-leg $50 parlay through BetMGM at +22670 odds.

With six legs on the moneyline for the favorite, seven legs on the spread for the favorite, one leg on the spread for the underdog, and one leg on Jin Young Koo to win the final tournament of the LPGA season at the CME Group Tour Championship, the bettor triumphed predicting all 15-legs, earning $1.1 million.

When devising a parlay, bettors have a plethora of options, whether they wish to place a parlay on multiple games during NFL Sunday, various NBA games across the week, or even season-long selections.

To offer a thrilling experience, BetMGM recently launched its One Game Parlay feature, allowing BetMGM users a straightforward way to create a parlay from the same game.

BetMGM users can utilize the One Game Parlay while wagering on the outright winner of the game, the over/under total, and individual player props. The One Game Parlay offers BetMGM users a compelling parlay experience that concludes after a single game instead of waiting for an assortment of games to finish.

Similar to a parlay, a teaser is essentially a parlay in which you make two or more bets while receiving an adjusted point spread in your favor. As a teaser alters the point spread to your benefit and boosts the chances of winning each bet, bettors are subject to a reduced payout should the bet be successful.

Teaser Bet Defined: A teaser (or a “two-team teaser”) is a type of gambling bet that allows the bettor to combine his bets on two different games. The bettor can adjust the point spreads for the two games, but realizes a lower return on the bets in the event of a win. … There are two types of teasers.

Two of the most popular teasers are a six-point, two-team teaser in football and a four-point, two-team teaser in basketball.

Proceeding back to the earlier example from Super Bowl 55, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were +3.5, and the over/under was 56.5, if you teased the game, you could have received the following:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers +9.5

Under 62.5

Traditionally, a two-team six-point teaser offers odds around -120. If you constructed a six-point, two-team teaser on the Buccaneers +9.5 and under 62.5, a $1,200 bet would net a $1,000 profit.

Taking the same example, though forming a traditional two-team parlay with -120 odds, if you placed $1,200 on the Buccaneers +3.5 and under 56.5, the bet would net $2,200.

Although a parlay offers bettors a higher reward than teasers, more risk is involved with assembling parlays, compelling bettors to create teasers, despite the lower payout.

Futures Bets

A futures bet is a wager placed on the outcome of an event that takes place down the line. Generally, bettors place futures bets on significant sporting events, like the World Series, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, or Stanley Cup Finals.

Although Major League Baseball is in its 9th work stoppage in league history, the BetMGM sportsbook offers odds on the 2022 World Series Champion. The Los Angeles Dodgers (+600) are the most likely to win the 2022 World Series, while the Baltimore Orioles (+50000) are the least likely to win the season’s final game.

To put this futures bet in perspective, a $100 bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers (+600) to win the 2022 World Series would net $600, while a $100 wager on the Baltimore Orioles (+50000) would earn $50,000.

Proposition Bets

While a futures bet is a wager to win an upcoming major sporting event, a proposition bet (prop bet) is often based on individual player statistics. An example of a futures bet is predicting the upcoming winner of Super Bowl 56 on February 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, while an example of a proposition bet is the number of passing yards Patrick Mahomes will throw this week.

BetMGM offers customers numerous paths to wager on prop bets, whether it’s the first team to score a touchdown, the number of three-pointers made by a specific player, the over/under on a starting pitcher’s strikeout total, or even whether the final score of a game will be odd or even.
